Here is a real conversation that I have had:
“What do you do at company XYZ?”
“I am an SEO analyst”
“SEO – WTF – Why?”
Yup. That is the reaction sometimes. If they know what SEO is, they sometimes don’t know that it needs to or should be analyzed, but most of time it is a set of letters that have absolutely no context to most people. Let’s dig into the idea and concept of SEo and why it needs to be a big part of your online marketing strategy.
SEO = Search Engine Optimization
SEO at its core is the idea that you should make sure that your website is geared to be indexed by search engines and then easily searched for by your potential viewers/customers/readers. The better your SEO, the better ranking in search engines. The better your ranking in search engines, the better chance that someone will find you when they are searching for topics related to your products or industry.
Now, you will see people proclaim, year after year, that SEO is dead. They are almost always wrong. SEO changes but the concept behind it is that you want to make your website easy to find you want to optimize it for Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. Obviously this is always going to be true.
SEO is a combination of keywords, meta content, rich content and using best practices put forth by Google and other search engines. This sounds really complicated but at the end of the day with research and the right tools it really isn’t as hard as it sounds. Plus, after you get used to writing good SEO-friendly content you will spend less time researching and more time producing content for the visitors to your website.
